Raleigh’s Healthy Smiles Start with Healthy Gums Fighting Periodontal Disease

A recent study showed a link between gum disease and obesity in younger people. In a study of 13,665 young adults ages 18-34 who had periodontal disease, 76 percent were more likely to be overweight or obese. Some researchers feel that the connection comes from an increase in consumption of sodas and a decrease in vitamin C and calcium intake through more nutritious beverages. Others suggest that obesity decreases immune system function, making these young people more susceptible to gum disease. Whatever the case, don’t take risks. Be sure to eat and drink nutritious, wholesome foods and see us regularly for cleanings and hygiene.
